Location

Tamarindo, Costa Rica is a among one of the most popular vacation destinations in Costa Rica. It's located on the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. With it's pristine beaches, crystal blue ocean waters and stunning natural landscape it's no wonder that it's one of Central America's most highly sought after destinations by surfers and sun worshippers alike.
Tamarindo hosts a wide range of activities. Just north of Tamarindo is Playa Grande where you can watch leatherback turtles (which can grow to the size of a small car) nest and lay there eggs. Nesting season typically lasts from November-April. You can also take part in a host wide range of other outdoor activities such as horseback riding, ziplining, sea kayaking, snorkeling, diving, fishing and golf.
The Tamarindo, Costa Rica area hosts beaches with waves for all levels of surfers. The following are some of the more popular surf breaks:
Tamarindo Beach
The area in front of the surf camp has gentler waves which are perfect for beginner/intermediate surfers. Larger surf is present by the rivermouth and north of the rivermouth and is good at any tide.
Witch's Rock
Considered one of Costa Rica's most famous, this spot is known for it's fast hollow rights and lefts when it's smaller. The best time to visit Witch's Rock is December-March when strong and consistent offshore winds make for big barrels but in general there are always good waves to be had here unless the wind is onshore. This is a must visit surf break for more experienced surfers.
Ollie's Point
Ollie's point is a fast-right-hollow point break which became popular through the movie 'Endless Summer II'. This break works best with a strong southern swell and is only accessible by boat.
Playa Grande
Playa Grande is beach break that throws both left and right peaks. The beach usually catches more swell than Tamarindo and has fun / rippable waves. It tends to close out at low tide so it's best surfed mid to high tide.
Avellanas
Avellanas consists of 5 or so different reef and beach breaks along a 2 mile stretch of beach. Surfable at any tide but best at mid to high tide.
Marbella
Known for its big and heavy waves, this san bottom break is generates the biggest waves in the area and there are good tube rides to be had.
